"
Double Ot"

Horses and horse breeders have changed over the years,
To some of us old Cowboys it’s enough to bring us to tears,
Some have bred fat, no bone, and a double O foot,
Which is what the judge wants if he’s going by the book.

To an old Cowboy who wants to go faster than a trot,
It’s hard for horses wearing a Double O,
Some of the Ranchers and Breeders I know have stayed with the foundation lines,
Joe Hancock is one that comes right to mind.

But there’s old Billy, Roan Dick, Steel Dust, and Peter McCue,
Not one of these old horses wore a Double O shoe,
Ranchers want a horse that has big bone,
And feet that are hard and as tough as stone.

Their horses have to be tough enough to work cattle all day,
And quiet enough to tie up all night wherever they stay,
All these horses from the foundation lines,
They proved themselves through the test of time.

I guess that little Double O foot is all right for a horse show,
But won’t stand up to where a Cowboy horse must go.
So I’ve learned that change is not always the best,
A good foundation horse will put any horse to the test.
